Title: Shadows
This is something Herc wrote and sent to me but I thought it was
excellent and well worth sharing ... sierra
There are no shadows in this place. No areas of mystery where the
imagination can go. What a marvelous thing is a shadow! I have
seen my own silhouette walk under me as the sun rode high. I have walked
through the woods at twilight my gaze alternating between the lighter
areas catching the last rays of day. Colors darkening, turning to gray's
,browns and black, patches where only my minds eye could travel. What
might be hidden there? An animal as yet unseen? Or might an
undiscovered treasure as simple as a fox's den lay within the sheltering
gloom?
When I walked the woods at twilight, my imagination walked beside me,
heightening my senses, opening my mind to any possibility. But there are
no shadows in this place. There is no room for fanciful imagining. All
everywhere is gripped tight in a brooding, continual, predatory and very
real ever present danger.
To imagine an enemy is an exercise in enjoyment, a conjured state of
alertness, of aliveness. but when that enemy is often real and not
imagined, when every potential hiding place, becomes a source of
tension, then the game ceases to be fun.
There are no shadows in this place. One cannot walk about with his
imagination beside him. To imagine an enemy might well blind a person to
the enemy who is very real. To slip along the corridors of one's
imagination is to lose that edge of readiness, and in this place, to be
unwary is to invite danger.
This proved to be the most difficult transition for me when I found
myself thrust into this place. I had to become more primal, I had to
survive among enemy's. Every moment on that instinctual edge, a state of
nervous energy that keeps my mind and muscles taut, always ready to
spring.
There are no shadows in this place. There is no room for imagination in
this place. It is a place for alertness, but not aliveness a place with
little room for hope and no room for dreams.
